We’re proud to share that Childs Engineering has been featured in the Summer 2025 issue of ASPIRE magazine for our role in the successful replacement of the Evans Mill Pond Pedestrian Bridge in Haddonfield, New Jersey.
This article highlights our work with Camden County’s Department of Parks to evaluate and redesign the aging pedestrian bridge over Evans Pond at Challenge Grove Park. Originally built around 1913, the structure was found to be in critical condition during inspection, leading to its closure. Childs Engineering was retained as the bridge design engineer to assess, plan, and guide the reconstruction effort.
Working within the constraints of the existing concrete abutments and nearby dam infrastructure, our team designed a durable and low-maintenance replacement superstructure using adjacent precast, prestressed concrete slab beams. This approach allowed for minimal impact to the surrounding environment, avoided disruption to water flow at the dam, and preserved the aesthetics of the park setting.
The new structure includes a stamped concrete deck, decorative stone-facing, and solar-powered bollards, features that complement the natural surroundings while meeting all modern load and safety requirements. The project was completed on time and on budget, opening to the public in May 2022.
