Underwater Bridge Inspection
In 2022, Childs Engineering was retained by the New York State Bridge Authority to perform underwater inspections and hydrographic surveys on several major Hudson River crossings, including the Rip Van Winkle, Kingston-Rhinecliff, Walkway Over the Hudson (Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge), Mid-Hudson, and Newburgh-Beacon Bridges (Northbound and Southbound).
The scope included underwater inspections, channel bathymetry, and side scan sonar imaging at the Rip Van Winkle and Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridges to assess substructure repairs and scour countermeasures. Hydrographic survey data was used to identify and assess scour activity around piers. All work complied with the new FHWA bridge element rating system, and results were uploaded to NYSDOT’s BDIS with updated substructure ratings.
